- (1909-59)One of the founders and first director of Israel's foreign intelligence service, Mossad (March 1951-September 1952). An intelligence official in the Yishuv, he was involved in the Rhodes and Lausanne talks following Israel's War of Independence (1948—49) and in the secret negotiations between Israel and King Abdullah of Jordan in 1949-50. He served as minister in Israel's embassy in Washington (1953-57) and as an adviser to then foreign minister Golda Meir (1958-59). An institute of Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University was named in his memory; it subsequently was incorporated into the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies.
